I hate this.
Sayings such as this do not inspire me.
They do not spark some sort of imaginary force of will that makes me spring to my feet, punch the air in victory and cause in me a paradigm shift so great I, as the quote suggests, change the world.
Why?
Because this shirt could say, ‘Humans Breathe Air and it causes us to continue our varied existence upon this goodly earth’ and it would be essentially the same thing.

OF COURSE WORDS AND IDEAS CHANGE THE WORLD! We live in a world that is ordered by the invisible constructs of CULTURE which is formed upon the basis of the written word and IDEAS. Our lives are directly impacted by words!
Take for example Newton’s Laws of Gravity. This is a fact of the world yes, but once the idea formed and documented and given the appropriate evidence- WHY, it changed the world.
Let us expand farther, shall we? The UN Charter of rights and freedoms. A piece of writing based upon an idea that changed the world.
The Harry Potter books- changed the world, just an idea written down.
Religion! The Quran, the Bible, the Torah, Buddhist Scriptures etc etc. ALL IDEAS (whether you believe they are from God or from humanity is up to you of course, no vocal judgement here in that regard) WRITTEN DOWN….and yes, yes you’ve guessed it. It changed the world.

So statements like these, that only serve to address the glaringly obvious truth of our culture, of humanity, of the basic nature of humanity infuriate me. What is so inspiring about this? Absolutely nothing.
We all aspire to write- for what? Oh yes, some of you posture about how it’s such a release for you. But why publish it on the internet? Because we want our ideas and written words to affect others. That’s what we’re searching for. Reading and writing are HIGHLY SOCIAL acts. How? Because it allows us to calibrate our own emotion into not just approximations of other emotion, but to connect, to empathize to, in other words connect.

I wish that we would just grow up, move beyond such basic notions. Yes, hurrah we get it. We’re humans we read and write, that’s what makes us not animals. Now let’s do something with that. Let’s print t-shirts that instead of saying inanity such as this, give succinct postulations about not the nature of humanity, but the depths of humanity. To explore and investigate every possible minutae of existence. Physical, metaphysical, universal, outer-universal. Just question bloody everything.
But don’t waste time contemplating the ‘wonder’ of basic statements.
Bloody waste of time you idiots.
